Join us in this culturally-rich city to share strategies and ideas for strengthening the future of museums, their programs, collections, and communities. The goal is to produce interesting, useful, thoughtful, and interactive sessions that address “best practices,” present model programs or techniques, and/or discuss trends that affect the future of the California museum community.

| MONTHLY MUSEUM POLL: HOW CREATIVE IS YOUR MUSEUM? |
A recent article in the New York Times discusses new strategies to encourage creative thinking in meetings and in the marketplace, inspired by recent publications such as A Whole New Mind by Daniel H. Pink and The Rise of the Creative Class by Richard Florida (see http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/30/business/businessspecial/30right.html). In an effort to encourage creative thinking and the use of the right side of the brain, meeting organizers are using children’s games, aromatherapy, puzzles, and stress balls to encourage employees to “think outside the box”. Are these strategies being used in museums? Does the leadership in California museums encourage their employees to be creative thinkers? These compelling strategies inspired the monthly poll for this month.

REPORT FINDS THAT MANY NONPROFIT CEOS ARE DISSATISFIED WITH BOARD PERFORMANCE
According to a new report from the Urban Institute, a significant number of CEOs at midsize nonprofits are dissatisfied with the performance of their boards, particularly in regard to fundraising and the way boards monitor their own performance. The report, Boards of Midsize Nonprofits: Their Needs and Challenges, examines the results of a 2005 survey of 1,862 nonprofits with annual expenses between $500,000 and $5 million and found that 62 percent of CEOs indicated that their boards do a fair or poor job of raising revenue, while 60 percent assigned similar marks for their boards' self-assessment activities. Although most CEOs rated their boards as good or excellent in most roles, the only area in which a majority — 53 percent — rated their boards as excellent was in respecting board-staff boundaries. To read the full report, see http://www.urban.org/UploadedPDF/411659_midsize_nonprofits.pdf.
