June Museum Poll Recap: Summer Programs

Summer is here and school is out. Summer holds the promise of swimming pools and summer camps. But parents know that it’s also a time when children can lose valuable educational gains made duringthe school year -- an average student who doesn’t read or engage in other learning opportunitiescan lose as much as 2.5 months of learning over the summer! This prompted the monthly poll for June, with CAM asking our subscribers, "Does your museum offer summer programs for K-12 children?"

According to our informal survey, 87.5% of California museums offer summer programs for K-12 schoolchildren! The most popular types of summer programs are camps (60.7%), workshops/classes (57.1%), family days (39.3%), tours (28.6%), and drop-in activities (17.9%). Respondents to this poll described their camps, why they offer these summer programs, and how they benefit their community. The following are comments from our subscribers:

"We have three 2 week half day summer camps. The focus is painting, sculpture and mixed media. The goal is to inspire creativity and fire the imagination of our young people." -- Anonymous

"We offer a summer camp to children preschool to high school throughout the summer, with scholarships to families in need. We also host a number of events and family overnights to bring families together to learn about conservation and appreciate our animals and their declining populations in the wild. We believe education about animals and conservation benefits the future of all species." -- Allison Krumsiek, Grants & Stewardship, Oakland Zoo

"Programs are week-long, some only for 2 hours a day (for 4&5 year olds), others are all day long. We serve ages 4 - 12. We offer the programs because we are in a unique position to teach about natural science using objects from our collections as well as live animals - and education is a big part of our mission. As a regional Natural history museum, it is a good time of year to get
the kids outdoors exploring our many local natural areas, getting to know their backyard. We have been running these programs for 16 years and receive a lot of positive feedback every year!" -- Melissa Zielinski, Director, HSU Natural History Museum

"The San Francisco Museum of Craft+Design offers public MakeArt programs, hands-on art workshops for children, about four times a year, including during the summer. In addition, the museum offers MakeArt programs to its community partners during the summer. These programs provide an opportunity for children to engage with art in an immediate way, visually and experientially. These programs are offered free to participants." -- Anonymous

"The Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History offers two summer camps: Art and Nature Camp, and Nature Survival Skills Camp. We also offer our Super Summer Saturday program June 28 through July 26. These programs are free with Museum admission, and compliment our summer temporary exhibit "A Magic Web: The Tropical Forest of Barro Colorado Island" from the Smithsonian Institution (July 12 through September 7.) Our summer programs offer the community hands-on experience with nature and art and help children and families build relationships with the natural world." -- Jenifer Lienau Thompson, Director, Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History

"We offer six, week-long, summer camps. Two are Space Camps and are directed by our Challenger Learning Center. Two are ecology camps, one is a nature camps for five and six year olds and one is our Community Partnership Camp that serves disadvantaged youth in Northeast Sacramento (the location of the Discovery Museum Science & Space Center." -- Susan Douglas, Public Programs Director, Discovery Museum Science & Space Center

"[The] first summer Plein-air Art Camp (one week day camp for High School art students nominated by their teachers) was very successful. We plan to repeat next year and expand." -- David Stuart, Executive Director/CEO, San Joaquin County Historical Society and Museum

"We offer free docent led tours year round for k-12 schools (many year round schools in Long Beach). We also offer seasonal festivals and public programs to engage people of all ages in the cultural arts and horticultural arts through hands-on activities. Our mission is to encourage an interest in culture, art and learning through the creative use of our garden and university resources. In the dense urban neighborhoods of Southern California, gardens are dynamic places for learning and social development within a green space that naturally facilitates concern for the environment. Most of our programs are free to children." -- Jeanette Schelin, Director, Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden, California State University, Long Beach

"We offer a summer art workshop for children ages 5 - 12 (in different classes) for two, two-week long sessions. There is always a theme, either content or technique. We always go into the museum galleries to look at, draw, and learn from the permanent collection. Connecting the class to the collection is very important." -- Lisa Cooperman, Curator of Education, The Haggin Museum

"Historically, the Palm Springs Art Museum has valued youth education programs as one of its highest priorities." -- Anonymous

"We have offered a slate of summer activities for children (a few days to a week) in the past. This year we are partnering with our Chamber of Commerce to support a new event that highlights discovery, innovation, and inspiration. Our offering this summer are two week-long periods in our hands-on TechLab called the Inventor's Workshop. Kids and families can visit once, twice, as many times as they like, and build and get pointers on building a mobile, whirligig, or wind-powered machine, to be displayed at the County event." -- Linda Deck, Director, Bradbury Science Museum

"We offer a Peek at the Past program in the Summer to children aged 4 to 8. Summer is the perfect time to bring the children and their guardian(s) together to think about History and enjoy the Museum in an educational yet fun and relaxed environment." -- Anonymous

"The Museum offers three sessions of summer camp during the summer (each session is one week long) as well as family days on various Saturdays throughout the summer. We also continue to work with nonprofit afterschool program providers (such as LA's BEST and the After-School All Stars) to bring students to the Museum during the summer months. While afterschool program participation drops during the summer, the Museum continues to serve a large number of students through its ongoing family programs, and the inclusion of summer camp programming." -- Meg Ford, Grant Development Coordinator, the Petersen Automotive Museum

"Week-long half-day camps for individuals from June 16 through August 22 for pre-K through grade 8. We also partner with YMCAs; they bring their campers to use for a half-day experience. We collaborate with other Museums in Balboa Park - a parent can drop off their child at our camp in the morning, lunch is supervised, and the parent picks up the child from another Museum in the Park." -- Anonymous

"Week long summer art camps for kids (gardes 2-6) led by professional artists in a variety of media. Scholarships are available." -- Anonymous

"The Manilatown Center is open for people of various ages to look at the exhibits and digital archives from Tuesday to Saturday. Our art raises critical questions about social issues. Our archives keep alive the memory of how redevelopment planning in San Francisco, from 1960-70, was not sensitive to elderly, immigrant and low-income peoples." -- Ellen-Rae Cachola, Archival Coordinator, Manilatown Heritage Foundation

"Good idea but too early for our museum." -- Anonymous
