What does CAM do as a legislative advocate for California museums?

  • Retains the services of a professional lobbyist in Sacramento
  • Informs policy makers about the importance of museums to the state
  • Regularly monitors various bills affecting museums and informs the museum community about the impact of legislative actions ( See "Legislative Action Alerts" and "Legislative News" below)
  • Actively supports additional funding for state agencies that support the state's museums
  • Spearheads the passage of a resolution and proclamation of California Museum Month for May of each year
  • Facilitates an informal Museum Caucus of lobbyists that represent museums in Sacramento to share resources and information
  • Conducts public relations efforts pertaining to California Museum Month
  • Awards the President's Award to 1-2 elected officials who have been especially supportive of California museums
  • Hosts a Museum Advocacy Day in May of each year to encourage museum administrators to meet with their elected officials
  • Conducts studies of the California museum field to track trends and understand how museums contribute to the state's communities, economy, tourism, and school system
  • Makes recommendations on appointments
