CAM has a long history of collecting benchmarking information about the museum field – much of it specific to museum personnel. As a matter of fact, CAM’s first survey on California museum personnel was in 1986 and we have been collecting data on the race and ethnicity of museum staff members and volunteers since 2002.

California Museums’ Diversity Survey Report - 2017

The Diversity Survey Report includes general statistics on the races, ethnicities, genders, and disabilities of California museum staff members, volunteers and board members. The report also includes comparable data from the U.S. Census and recommendations for museums. Museum Audiences Survey Report – 2017 (to be released soon)
The Museum Audiences Survey Report includes general statistics on museum attendance and audiences, including admission prices and hours. The report also includes the types of information collected from visitors and methods for measuring impact. Free for ENGAGE and LEAD CAM institutional members / $15 for all other CAM members / $30 for non-members

National Salary Survey - 2017
The 2017 National Museum Salary Survey is available to purchase through the American Alliance of Museums. CAM partnered with AAM, six regional museum associations (Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Mountain-Plains, New England, Southeastern, and Western) and four other state museum associations (Florida, New York, Texas, and Virginia) to collect and release the survey results. The report includes salary data on 52 positions with in-depth analysis by gender and education levels of individuals, as well as by budget size, museum type, geographic setting (urban, suburban, rural), region, and governance. Smaller “snapshot” reports for specific staffing categories are available for $20 each. The full report is available for $100, or $60 for members of AAM and of the regional and state project partner organizations, including CAM. The results are based on a sampling of 107 California museums.
