Inaugural Secretary's Award for Excellence in Sustainability
The Secretary's Award for Excellence in Sustainability Competition recognizes the outstanding achievements in California museum sustainability work. The competition is a joint project of the sponsors, the California Association of Museums (CAM) and the California Natural Resources Agency. The awards program began in 2018 and recognizes leadership in two areas: programs and internal museum operations. To learn more, read the guidelines, entry instructions and scoring rubric.

Earth Stewards Project (Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History)
During Earth Stewards Project, the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History engages alternative education high school students in immersive outdoor experiences that teach STEM subjects, nurture an appreciation for nature, leave a positive environmental impact, build vocational skills, and cultivate the next generation of environmental stewards.
EcoCenter Internship Program (EcoCenter at Heron's Head Park)
As the first LEED environment education community center in San Francisco, the EcoCenter at Heron’s Head Park created an internship program that empowered youth in the Bay View community to carry on sustainability practices. The unique program facilitated active learning of solar photovoltaic systems, wastewater treatment and management, living roofs, native plant landscaping; preparing the intern cohort with the appropriate skill-sets.
Every Action Matters (San Diego Museum of Man)
The San Diego Museum of Man believes that every staff member’s contribution to sustainability is the key to its success. Our program entitled Every Action Matters focuses on employee engagement at every level and emphasizes that major goals are accomplished via the small steps taken by individuals.
Green Generation Mixer and Sustainability Project Showcase (Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden)
The Green Generation Mixer and Sustainability Project Showcase is a collaborative annual event that inspires innovation and strengthens community partnerships to build a culture of sustainability and resiliency on the CSULB campus and across the City of Long Beach.
