Superintendent's Award
Recognizing Excellence in Museum Education
The Superintendent’s Award for Excellence in Museum Education competition recognizes the outstanding achievements in California museum programs that serve K-12 students and/or educators. The competition is the joint project of the sponsors, the California Association of Museums (CAM) and the California Department of Education (CDE). Since 2012, the competition has recognized 75 programs, presented by a diverse range of institutions that demonstrate the vibrant contributions museums make to California’s K-12 educational system. In 2025, CAM and the CDE recognized 3 outstanding programs that took place in 2024.
Cabrillo High School Aquarium ‒ Exploring Central Coast Marine Ecosystems
Each year, 200 CTE students at the Cabrillo High School Aquarium work with advisors to design all-new standards-based labs using conservation topics such as wetland ecosystems and kelp forest biodiversity. The students then host thousands of elementary students who participate in the hands-on activities throughout their visit to the Aquarium.
Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site ‒ Adelante: The People of Rancho Los Cerritos
Fourth grade students see their local history brought to life in Adelante: The People of Rancho Los Cerritos. In this school tour, students engage in inquiry and hands-on activities to explore what life was like when Rancho Los Cerritos was a working ranch.
Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco ‒ Equity School Partnership Project
The Equity School Partnership Project (ESPP) is a multi-visit program that serves students historically underserved by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. ESPP centers the student experience through culturally responsive teaching and social emotional learning, building greater relevance for the museum’s collections across the San Francisco Unified School District.
