Annual Conference

CAM 2026 - Reframing

Reframing encapsulates the tangible nature of museum work–what we restore, revive, and rebuild–and the intangible nature of museum work–where we reflect, interpret, educate, and shift perspectives. On a larger scale, Reframing gives us the power to redefine who we are, why we’re important, and how we connect with and show up for our community. Reframing is resistance and resilience.

We look forward to reuniting with the California museum community in Los Angeles, March 10–13, 2026 at the Omni Hotel.

Land Acknowledgement

Land Acknowledgement

As CAM welcomes you to the 2026 Annual Conference Reframing, we acknowledge and honor the original inhabitants of the lands on which we gather. California is home to more than 150 federally and non-federally recognized tribes, each with distinct cultures, languages, and histories.

We acknowledge that this conference takes place on the ancestral and unceded homelands of the Gabrieleno Tongva people, who have stewarded this land since time immemorial. We honor their enduring relationship to this place and their continued presence, leadership, and cultural vitality.

We encourage conference attendees to learn more about the history, culture, and ongoing work of the Gabrieleno Tongva community and to seek ways to support their initiatives directly. To learn more, please visit the Gabrieleno Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians’ website: www.gabrieleno-nsn.us

A Call to Action

An acknowledgement is only one step toward building meaningful relationships with Native communities. Museums and many cultural institutions were founded upon purposeful exclusions and erasures of Indigenous peoples, and many continue to benefit from settler colonial systems and associated harms.

The California Association of Museums (CAM) is committed to moving beyond acknowledgement into action. We encourage all conference participants to learn about the land they live and work on, to build relationships with local communities of First Peoples, and to find tangible ways to celebrate, support, and advocate alongside them.

We invite you to learn more about the original stewards of your area. A helpful (though not definitive) resource is: https://nahc.ca.gov/cp/

We also encourage attendees to reflect on and name the traditional lands they are joining us from during the conference such as: “I work on the traditional territory of the Ohlone people.”

There are many ways museums can uplift and engage with local Tribal communities. Here are just a few ways to engage:

  • Learn whose land you live and work on and share that knowledge with your institution.
  • Build relationships with local Tribal communities beyond moments of crisis or visibility.
  • Compensate Native speakers, artists, and knowledge-keepers fairly.
  • Support Tribal-led cultural initiatives and educational programming.
  • Advocate for repatriation, accurate representation, and Tribal consultation in museum work.
  • Amplify Indigenous voices in exhibitions, programming, and leadership roles.

VibePass Digital Conference Companion

Introducing a special collaboration with VibePass

We are excited to announce that this year CAM is partnering with VibePass to create a user-friendly digital conference companion that will host all program details in an accessible interface for speakers and attendees. This partnership will take our conference experience to the next level and is a significant step forward in collaborative learning about how technology can amplify the arts in an impactful way!

CAM is committed to learning about how to engage with AI technologies in an ethical and sustainable way. In this spirit, we wanted to take a moment to share more with you about this platform and partnership.

Explore the Conference Companion!

About the Digital Conference Companion:

The CAM 2026 Reframing Conference Companion is a mobile first digital guide that helps attendees navigate the program, access key logistics, and engage with conference resources in a simple way without an app download or login. It is designed to be multilingual and accessible by default, and it uses only the conference information CAM chooses to include. Attendees can engage with the conference in real time through a private, ethically grounded experience with no app download or login required.

What the companion does and does not do:

  • It supports program discovery, wayfinding, accessibility information, and optional reflection prompts.
  • It does not replace registration, does not require attendee accounts, and does not track individuals. Any usage reporting is aggregate only.

Privacy & Stewardship:

  • Please note that the digital companion is developed from the ground up with privacy and responsible stewardship in mind.
  • The platform does not require personal information from attendees to be used.
  • Content included in the companion is only limited to what CAM provides and approves, and we have full control to adjust inclusions as needed.

“This partnership between Vibe Pass AI and the California Association of Museums marks a new standard for how our field can use AI with care. We are building a grounded, multilingual, accessibility first conference companion that makes the experience more frictionless for every attendee while creating interactive digital touchpoints that bring programs, spaces, and stories more fully to life. This same approach can extend into museums as a respectful digital layer that helps stories move beyond glass enclosures, frames, and do not cross lines, inviting visitors to engage, respond, and leave a thoughtful footprint as part of the experience. What begins at CAM 2026 sets the foundation for a new category of ethical, museum centered digital companions that institutions across California can carry forward. We are proud to introduce the first ever CAM 2026 REFRAMING Conference Companion powered by Vibe Pass AI, redefining the digital engagement layer through emerging technology.”

Justification Toolkit

Justification Toolkit

The California Association of Museums (CAM), one of the largest and most active state museum associations in the nation, is committed to providing networking and professional development programs that help realize a vision of “stronger museums for a stronger California.” For over a decade, the association has invested in field leadership in California by supporting networks of museum professionals interested in strategic foresight, environmental sustainability, the diversification of the museum workforce, and collaborative learning. For many museum professionals, CAM’s annual conference provides significant professional development and networking opportunities to advance their practice and careers. CAM recognizes how important it is to make and maintain connections with other museum professionals throughout your career. We also understand how difficult it can be to ask your employer for support to attend annual conferences. Below you will find tools to help you justify the significance of attending CAM’s annual conference and the benefits it will have for you and your employer.

Benefits of Going to the Conference
Below are a few benefits of attending CAM’s annual conference. We recommend using some of this language in your email to your employer. Pay close attention to the points that would directly benefit your institution.

Networking
Conferences are a great place to network with other museum professionals. You can meet people who work in a similar position as yourself or someone from a completely different department from whom you can bounce ideas. There are so many options on who you can connect with and the possibilities beyond that connection are endless. Networking builds bridges for your institution, leading to collaborations and knowledge-sharing that go beyond the few days of the conference.

Learning
During CAM’s annual conference, there are many different learning opportunities including workshops, roundtables, case studies, creative stations, and panel sessions. Throughout the conference, you will be able to directly engage with presenters and exhibitors, and hear about practices to take home to your institution and that you can use for your professional development.

Get Inspired
Hearing from fellow California museum professionals gives us space for creativity and dialogue. When you attend a CAM annual conference you get the opportunity to learn about what others are doing. Interactions at CAM can open many doors, and offer insights about what you could bring back to or develop at your institution. Attending a CAM conference might just inspire you to determine where you see yourself in the field.

Staying in the loop
The California museum field is constantly evolving. As museum professionals, it’s important to stay up-to-date with what is happening in the many areas of museums. CAM’s annual conference is a great way to learn about updated museum best practices and explore new ideas that are transpiring across the field. The learnings you gain at the conference can be shared with colleagues at your home institution (consider doing a brown bag meeting to share out about the sessions you attended!), ensuring that practices are aligned with the innovations and latest developments in the field.

Asking for Institutional Support
There are different ways someone could ask for support from their institution. It is primarily a request for time off to attend a conference or assistance in paying for the conference. Either way, we want you to be prepared for your situation. The reason for attending a conference can be deeply personal; when you request their support, you should relay what you hope to gain from the experience. It is key to emphasize that the tools you take away from the experience benefit the organization just as much as it does to you. If you are unsure how to draft an email to your manager, CAM is providing a template for your use.

Scholarships

CAM 2026 Scholarship Opportunities

The California Association of Museums (CAM) is offering two scholarship opportunities to the CAM 2026 Conference: Reframing. With support from the Handumy Jean Tahan Museums Fund and the Getty Foundation* CAM is pleased to offer a total of 55 scholarships between the two funders. While the opportunities are separate, you can apply to one or both opportunities through this application. Both scholarships include a 90% discount on conference registration, a CAM Individual Lead Membership ($100 value), and funds for travel assistance ($100 value). Membership and travel assistance benefits will be remitted after the conference takes place, upon confirmation of attendance.

*Getty’s support is specifically directed to alumni of the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program, and past participants in the program that interned at Getty or anywhere else in Los Angeles County are welcome to apply for the fellowships. Preference will be given to Getty Marrow alumni who completed their internship in the last five years, those who have not previously received scholarship support for a CAM conference, and those who are working in the arts. All scholarship recipients will be responsible for $50 in registration fee. This contribution allows CAM to provide scholarships to more museum professionals.

Applications closed on Sunday, February 8, 2026 for a scholarship. Contact engagement@calmuseums.org with questions.
