How can we in museums approach the need for greater diversity and equality using empathy as our lens? This program explored the philosophy and tools developed by The Empathetic Museum for confronting histories of colonialism, racism, and privilege by developing the practice of institutional empathy (i.e., the intention of the museum to be, and be perceived as, deeply connected with its community). Keeping donors engaged during difficult economic times can be challenging for museums. Quite often, funding organizations will redirect their efforts to the more immediate needs of their communities, such as social services and housing. The current pandemic is no exception. How can we continue to make the case for museums, keeping our current and future donors engaged while staying true to our mission?

Learn more about Culture + Community in a Time of Crisis, a special edition of Culture Track, a collaboration between Slover Linett Audience Research and LaPlaca Cohen on a national research and strategy initiative to support the cultural sector and help strengthen communities around the U.S. during and after this COVID-19 crisis. Our speaker discusses areas in which California museum visitors are unique in their survey responses regarding: their perceptions of the sector, behaviors during COVID-19, use of digital, and desire for change in the arts and culture sector with comparison to the general public. She also highlights some differences in responses across race and ethnicity, particularly with respect to past visitation and affiliation, digital activities, and desired change in arts and culture organizations.

Jen also shares some pre-release finding from a new report by the team at Slover Linett on the role of race and ethnicity in cultural engagement in the U.S. and highlights opportunities to deepen engagement with BIPOC communities.
